Standard Crosstrek or Wilderness, and Where the Hybrid Fits

The gas Crosstrek runs Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Wilderness, all on the same 2.5-liter, 180-horsepower SUBARU BOXER engine with a continuously variable transmission. The Crosstrek Hybrid is offered in Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology run across every one of them, so those are not things you step up a trim to get.

The real fork is the Wilderness. It sits 9.3 inches off the ground against 8.7 on the standard trims, adds shorter gearing and its own exterior protection, and it is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds where the standard trims are rated to 1,500. Dual-function X-MODE is not part of that difference, it is standard on every Crosstrek. It pays for that with fuel economy. If your driving is Vero Beach and the causeways, the standard trims are the better vehicle; if you are pulling a small boat or spending time on sand and unimproved tracks, the Wilderness is the one that was built for it. Availability by trim, powertrain and color varies as vehicles arrive and are sold.

Read the towing row and the fuel economy row together, because they are the same decision seen twice. The Wilderness earns its keep if you actually use the capability and costs you at the pump if you do not.

Why This One Sells on the Treasure Coast

The Crosstrek is the Subaru people buy when they want the all-wheel drive and the extra height off the ground without the footprint of something larger, and in a town built around bridges, causeways and a lot of parallel parking that combination makes sense. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a full time mechanical system, so power is already at all four wheels when you meet standing water rather than being sent there after a wheel has spun. EyeSight is standard rather than optional, and DriverFocus is standard on the Limited and Limited Hybrid and is not offered on the other trims. All of it assists an attentive driver rather than replacing one; the driver stays responsible for watching traffic, surroundings and road conditions.

New Subaru Crosstrek Questions From Vero Beach Shoppers

What trims does the Crosstrek come in?
The gas range runs Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Wilderness, and the hybrid is offered in Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid. What is actually on the lot at any moment is a shorter list, so check the grid or ask what is due in.
Is there only one engine?
For the gas trims, yes: a 2.5-liter 180-horsepower SUBARU BOXER across Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Wilderness. The hybrid uses its own powertrain, so the choice is gas or hybrid rather than a choice between gas engines.
How much can a Crosstrek tow?
Standard trims are rated up to 1,500 pounds and the Wilderness up to 3,500 pounds. Maximum capacity varies by trim, so confirm the figure for the individual vehicle before you buy a trailer to match it.
Is the Wilderness worth it if I am not going off road?
Probably not. It buys height off the ground, gearing, towing capacity and protection you will not use on paved roads, and it costs you fuel economy every day, so the standard trims are usually the better vehicle for Vero Beach driving.
Is EyeSight standard on the entry trim?
Yes. EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is standard across the Crosstrek range rather than reserved for higher trims. It assists an attentive driver and is not a substitute for driving attentively.
Can I see a gas and a hybrid back to back?
Ask and we will set it up where both are on the lot. It is the one comparison worth doing in person, because the difference is in how the vehicle behaves at low speed rather than in anything you can read.
